Pretzels: Invented by European Monks, loved by all!

Benji and his Special Guest, Cousin Simona, make yummy Soft Pretzels ...and it's easier than you think!

This recipe is great for play dates, picnics, or to have on hand for a yummy snack with staying power... They will last about two months in the freezer.

  • 1 Egg
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Sugar
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 Package Dry Active Yeast
  • 2.5 - 3 Cups Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1 Cup Warm Water
  • Plus Toppings: We used Shredded Cheese and Coarse Salt

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. In a Large Mixing Bowl, combine Water, Salt, Sugar, and Yeast and whisk until combined.
  2. Wait 5 Minutes to activate Yeast.
  3. Add in Flour and mix thoroughly. This will be a very dense dough.
  4. Knead dough for about 3 minutes and cut into six pieces.
  5. Roll dough in hands and make a snake-like shape.
  6. Fold into a Pretzel shape.
  7. To get that authentic pretzel look, dunk them into a large pan with 3 Cups of Hot Water and 1/2 Tablespoon Baking Soda - That is the proper ratio. Have a parent help if needed!
  8. Wish the egg in a bowl and dunk pretzels into egg wash - both sides.
  9. Sprinkle extra Coarse Salt or Shredded Cheese onto pretzels and pop them into the oven for about 10 minutes. Optional: After 10 minutes, change oven to Broil for 3-5 minutes and watch them carefully so they do not burn.
  10. Let cool and Enjoy!
